Spectacular fossilized freshwater crab, preserved in travertine, complete, without any restoration. The piece measures ± 11 × 9.2 cm and the crab ± 5 cm in diameter. It is fully encased and preserved as a three-dimensional external mold within a natural cavity of a white travertine matrix. It is covered by an inorganic film of calcium carbonate.
* Travertine is a type of limestone that forms around mineral springs. The crabs died when an overheated hydrothermal fluid passed through the galleries and has since been preserved.
