Cross-section of a bone from the dinosaur Atlasaurus imelakei. It measures 15.5 x 6.5 cm and is 1 cm thick. The bone trabeculae are clearly visible.
*Atlasaurus imelakei (Greek: "giant Atlas reptile") lived during the middle Jurassic period in Africa. Its remains were discovered by Monbaron, Russell, and Taquet in 1999 in the Tiougguit Formation of the Atlas Mountains in the Azilal province of Morocco, North Africa. Its generic name comes from the Titan Atlas, who held up the sky on his shoulders, and from the Arabic word "Imelake," meaning giant.
