Phytosaurus vertebra, measuring approximately 3.5 x 3.5 cm, complete. Sandblasted, revealing all its features.
*Phytosaurs (from the Greek, meaning "plant lizard") are an extinct group of large, mostly semi-aquatic, archosauriform reptiles from the Late Triassic. Phytosaurs had long snouts and heavy armor, and closely resembled modern crocodiles in size, appearance, and lifestyle, as an example of convergent or parallel evolution. The name "phytosaur" means "plant reptile" because early phytosaur fossils were mistakenly thought to belong to herbivores.
