Spectacular slice of the Muonionalusta meteorite; IVA type iron meteorite. Fine octahedrite. The piece has been cut and polished to reveal the Widmanstätten patterns. Comes with a presentation box and description.
It weighs approximately 16.6 grams and measures approximately 3.8 x 4.2 cm.
*Widmanstätten structures are present in certain iron meteorites and pallasites. They are the result of the intergrowth of bands of taenite and kamacite (two alloys of iron [Fe] and nickel [Ni]), formed by extremely slow cooling over a very long period, on the order of 100 to 10,000 °C/million years. This explains why this structure cannot be reproduced in a laboratory.
